Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: Leave Your Toronto Rental Spotless
· Soda Cleaning, Toronto

Whether you’re chasing a deposit, a clean hand-over inspection, or just your own standards, move-out cleaning is a different job from weekly cleaning. The unit is empty, so everything shows — and the person inspecting it is actively looking for what you missed.
What Inspections Actually Focus On
Landlords and property managers check the same places, in roughly this order:
- The oven and stovetop. The single most-failed item. Baked-on grease is read as “tenant never cleaned.”
- Inside the fridge. Emptied, wiped, no smells, freezer defrosted if applicable.
- Bathroom grout, glass and fixtures. Soap scum and limescale are obvious in an empty bathroom.
- Inside cabinets and closets. Crumbs in kitchen drawers, dust on closet shelves.
- Baseboards, vents and light fixtures. Invisible when furnished; glaring when the room is bare.
- Walls and switch plates. Scuffs near door handles, fingerprints around switches.
The Room-by-Room Checklist
Kitchen — inside and outside of all cabinets and drawers; oven, racks and stovetop; range hood and filter; fridge inside/outside and behind it if you can move it; sink descaled; counters and backsplash.
Bathrooms — toilet including base and behind; tub/shower with grout and glass de-scaled; vanity inside and out; mirror; exhaust fan cover.
All rooms — baseboards wiped, not just dusted; vents and cold-air returns; light fixtures and bulbs; window interiors, tracks and sills; closet shelves and rods; walls spot-cleaned; floors vacuumed and mopped last, working toward the door.
Don’t forget — the inside of the front door, the balcony, the laundry closet, and the top of anything taller than eye level.
DIY or Hire It Out?
A proper move-out clean on an empty 1-bedroom takes one person 4 to 6 hours with good products — more if the oven is bad. Against a moving day that already includes a truck, an elevator booking and key hand-overs, that’s the part most people regret keeping for themselves.
The math is simple: our fully equipped move-out cleaning starts at $249, and we bring everything — supplies, products, vacuum. Compare that to a withheld deposit or a re-cleaning invoice from a property manager (routinely $300+ downtown, on their choice of vendor) and it’s cheaper to get it right once.
If you’ve already moved and can’t be there, that’s normal — lockbox, concierge or agent hand-off all work, and we send photos when the unit is done.
Selling Instead of Renting?
The same fully equipped service is what realtors book to get listings photo-ready — the standard is the same, the deadline is a photographer instead of an inspection. We’ll cover that separately in our guide to prepping a home for sale.
